February is recognized as Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Activist Malcolm L. Astley, Ed.D. is a featured speaker at the 2016 Junior Auxiliary Annual Education Conference. He will present his program, Looking Under The Anger: Liberating Our Youth From Violence.
Dr. Astley is the father of Lauren Dunne Astley and along with Lauren’s mother, Mary Dunne, established the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Fund to honor the life of their daughter. Lauren was a beautiful, talented and beloved 18-year-old young woman who had just graduated from Wayland High School in Massachusetts and planned to attend Elon University in North Carolina. Lauren was passionate about her friends and family, the arts and
community service. She died on July 3, 2011 at the hands of her former boyfriend, a victim of the disturbing phenomenon of breakup violence.
Dr. Astley and Lauren’s mother, Mary Dunne, have spoken at over 100 high schools, religious centers, community centers, colleges, universities, civic centers, and governmental meetings at the state and national level regarding the problem of violence and particularly boy’s and men’s violence against girls and women and also against each other. A documentary on Lauren's story, Loved to Death, can be viewed by watching the video below or clicking here to go to the 48-Hours website.
